Description

Presentation

The Institute of Space Sciences (IEEC-CSIC) is an institution at the forefront of scientific and technological research with the mission of contributing to the general advance of studies of the Cosmos.

The theme of the 2nd Institute of Space Sciences Summer School will be Gravitational Wave Astronomy

Rationale

Gravitational Wave Astronomy has become a reality after the detection of the gravitational waves emitted by a coalescing binary black hole system by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Antenna (LIGO) in September 14th, 2015 (the event known as GW150914).

Up to know, the LIGO-Virgo collaboration have announced five detections from binary black holes and one from a binary neutron star system. These detections have already provided revolutionary discoveries. The road towards these impressive achievements has involved a combination of high technological developments, sophisticated data analysis algorithms, and theoretical studies.

The main goal of this school is to present the basic foundations of Gravitational Waves: From the detection principles and technology to the revolutionary science that can be made and its impact on Astrophysics, Cosmology, and Fundamental Physics; including the modeling of the gravitational-wave emission and the data analysis techniques.

The Institute of Space Sciences will welcome around 30 Master and Doctoral students to attend the Summer School: they will broaden their knowledge on this exciting field as well as get in touch with the other research groups working at the Institute.
